Up Close – with more teachers…

It’s time to continue our close look at Quilt Canada’s suite of teachers – following up on previous posts on our International teachers and the first sixof our 25 Canadian teachers.

We’ll continue alphabetically, by first name.

Let’s start with Elaine Quehl. Elaine is an award winning quilt artist, teacher and dyer who specializes in colourful and intricately-stitched pieced and applique quilts. Elaine’s work has been shown extensively in Canada and the United States and she is in much demand as a teacher. In fact, I can recall my very first machine quilting class taught by Elaine in Ottawa several years ago – she helped me discover new ways to use my sewing machine and I have never looked back. Elaine will offer three classes – Fast and Fun Fused Designs, Beyond Stippling and Collage Tree.

Elinor Burwash is a long-time quilter who began working with textiles as a young girl, starting with doll clothes and working her way up to quilting in the 1970′s. Elinor enjoys all forms of quilting and the classes that she will be teaching at Quilt Canada – the Four Seasons: Autumn and Design on a Theme – are evidence of her skills in both traditional and abstract quilts.

2010 CQA/ACC Teacher of the Year, F. Dianne L. Stevenson, has been sharing her love of quilting with students for 36 years. A 5th generation quilter, Dianne likes to use traditional quilt designs and history as her springboard. In particular, she enjoys breathing new life into old fashioned blocks. Dianne has taught and lectured internationally and throughout British Columbia. Learn some interesting techniques in Dianne’s workshops In Honor Of ….. , and Celtic Interlacing.

Gunnel Hag studied textile design in Sweden and England and she produces fabric for film and theatre productions through her Toronto-based studio, Trees Textile Designers and Printers. A published author, Gunnel has shown her fabrics at international design exhibitions, and has taught here in Canada and abroad. Ever wanted to try your hand at dyeing your own fabric – take a close look at Gunnel’s workshops: Colour andTexture on Fat Quarters and Irresistible Resists.

Heather Lair has been a full time quilter for more than 30 years. Her award winning quilts have been exhibited across Canada. Heather’s work has been displayed at numerous galleries and juried shows and her many commissioned pieces have appeared in television shows, movies, and graced homes and public buildings from Manitoba to Japan, Iceland and South Africa. Heather is originally from Prince Edward Island and we will be happy to have her “home” in the Maritimes to teach three workshops at Quilt Canada – The Colours of Nebula, Green Party Dress and Torn Strip Applique.

Heather Stewart comes from a long line of Mennonite quilters and has been sharing her quilting skills with students for more than 30 years. Named the 2009 CQA/ACC Teacher of the Year, Heather is a quiltmaker, teacher, lecturer, judge and restorer of antique quilts. Heather’s quilting skills run the gamut – from traditional to contemporary. Her quilts are in collections in countries around the world. Heather has taught at five Quilt Canada conferences and this year will be teaching four (yes, four!) classes – You’ve Got Mail, Fireside Log Cabin, Colour Studies for Stash Quilters and Quilt Marking Mysteries.

Look at the workshop list for more information on these teachers and the classes they will offer at Quilt Canada in 2012. More teacher profiles coming soon.
